Five Contenders, Six Rounds and No Prizes for Participation

It has been some time since short-drama apps were a niche curiosity. Per Sensor Tower, the category generated about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue in Q1 2025, with 49% of it coming from the US. Roughly $2.8–3B was the figure for full-year 2025, and the quarterly figure had grown to about $750M by Q1 2026. ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave are the five names that dominate the conversation, and any shopper who has searched a store for a short reels app has met reel shorts at least one of them. On the surface, all five seem identical, offering vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Underneath, they differ on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that affect what you pay and where you can watch. Across six rounds, we named a winner in each, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Big Head-to-Head Grid

Here is the entire field on one screen before the rounds start. As of September 2026, the prices are the figures listed in the US App Store, though they vary by country, platform and promotion. The market shares come from Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. The Google Play listing of each app provides the install counts. Where a cell says ”not reported”, no reliable source published the figure, and we would rather leave a gap than guess. The grid works as the scoreboard, and the rounds below serve as the commentary.

Round 1: Owners and Scale

ReelShort, the incumbent, still carries the most weight. Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group, launched it in August 2022, and MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China. MPA also puts 2025 revenue for the app at $785M and forecasts $1.05B for 2026. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and has about 21%. By Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first, even though in Q1 2025, Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M. Often mistyped as ”dreamwave”, DramaWave is the youngest app here, yet it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax, which operates from Hong Kong, appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. My Drama, the minnow with 5M+ Android installs, is still the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. As a point of reference, GoodShort, which sits just outside this lineup, holds about 6%. Round winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

Round 2: Price

This is the round where the apps look most alike. A weekly pass at roughly $19.99 is sold by ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave in the US App Store, and each one renews automatically. DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99, and ShortMax also offers a $9.99 ”Weekly Pass Pro”. DramaBox goes a different route: auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99. In these US listings, the only verified monthly plan is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, which makes it the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass total about $80, which makes a monthly plan at less than half that the better buy for steady watchers. Because prices change by country, platform and promotion, the number on your screen may differ. Round winner: DramaWave, whose monthly plan undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin.

Round 3: Free Options

Free viewing is the topic where the marketing turns loud and the details get thin. Per ReelShort’s own blog, the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad opens up two premium episodes. Paid coins do not expire, but free reward coins usually do, and a seven-day check-in streak earns 100+ of them. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, which are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Only third-party guides give DramaBox’s exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins, even if the app has free options too. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and ”unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. The winner: ReelShort, clearly.

Round 4: Platforms

Real differences show up on screens, where these apps really split apart. iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android are all covered by ReelShort, which also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. Because its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax also offers web browsing. On DramaBox’s side, the website mostly points you back to the app, while DramaWave is verified only on its iOS and Android apps. My Drama holds the trump card, with an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Round winner: ReelShort overall; My Drama takes the living room.

Round 5: Libraries and Original Series

When it comes to raw numbers, ShortMax is unbeatable. More than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets had been produced by the company behind ShortTV as of January 2024 (most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations), and the app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. DramaWave claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, and reports say more than 80% of its newly released content is AI-generated. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. For its part, DramaBox brings an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. My Drama boasts the most interesting pipeline, since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Round winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.

Round 6: Perks and Fine Print

In this round, DramaWave runs away with it. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video all appear in its App Store listing, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. The next most useful perk, for viewers who move between phone and laptop, is ReelShort’s cross-device sync. And take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given ”unless the paid product/service is unusable”, and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. On any of these apps, deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. Round winner: DramaWave.

The Final Picks: Best For

Since no single short drama app sweeps every round, the right choice comes down to how you watch. For Apple TV, My Drama is best: it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. For web viewing, ReelShort is best, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers, since it pairs offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. On sheer volume, ShortMax is best, with claimed 50,000+ dramas that overshadow everything else in the grid. DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, is best for backing the current revenue leader. Thanks to its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels, ReelShort is again best for free, legitimate sampling. Choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day if all five tempt you.
